The Man on the Mat: Your Inner Friends and the Healing You Deserve

One of my favorite stories in Scripture is found in Mark 2:1-12—the story of the man on the mat.

Jesus is teaching in a house in Capernaum. The place is packed. People are crowded at the door. And outside, there's a man on a mat. He's paralyzed. He can't walk. He can't get to Jesus on his own.

But he has friends. And these friends are determined. They dig through the roof—literally tear apart the ceiling—and lower their friend down on his mat right in front of Jesus.

When Jesus sees this, he's moved. He says to the paralyzed man, "Your sins are forgiven" and then, "Get up, take your mat and go home."

The man gets up. He walks. He's healed.

What This Story Reveals About Healing

This story has always fascinated me because it reveals something essential about how healing happens. The man on the mat couldn't heal himself. He needed his friends. He needed people who believed in his healing enough to tear through obstacles to get him to Jesus.

But here's what I want to focus on: the man on the mat is a metaphor for your wounded self. And his friends are a metaphor for your inner resources—the healthy, strong parts of you that can carry your wounded self into healing.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy calls these inner resources "parts." You have many parts. You have a part that's protective and strong. You have a part that's creative and playful. You have a part that's wise and discerning. You have a part that's compassionate and nurturing.

And you have wounded parts. Parts that are stuck in old pain. Parts that are trying to protect you in ways that no longer serve you. Parts that carry shame, fear, anger, or despair.

The healing journey isn't about getting rid of your wounded parts. It's about getting your healthy parts to carry your wounded parts into the presence of healing—into the presence of Jesus, into the presence of love, into the presence of wholeness.
